At the end of last year I took a few weeks off and had a wonderful holiday traveling around Spain. I promised the kids that I'd come home with lots of great ideas for our art class ......
After looking at 'The Elephants' by Spanish Surrealist artist Salvidor Dali we drew our own elephants (and other creatures!) in the style of Dali, with bodies positioned high in the page and balanced on impossibly spindly legs.

After outlining our drawings with black sharpie markers, and a discussion about how to choose colors that will blend well together (colors close to each other on the color wheel) we colored the entire page with thickly applied watercolor pencil. Then we took them outside to spritz them with water.
Holding them up by the top corners, we let the pencil/paint blend and run together in rivulets. When we were happy with the effect we then laid them flat to dry.
I love the way the colors become so brilliant with the water application, and the way the colors run and blend is so spontaneous and unpredictable.
